Blue Ridge Community College 2024 Annual Report

Type: Print Design
Role: Senior Graphic Designer

Project Overview

Blue Ridge Community College produces an annual report to share milestones, stories, and impact with students, partners, and the broader community. The 2024 report started with a clear creative direction focused on growth and momentum. Midway through production, Hurricane Helene affected the region, changing both the tone and the responsibility of the piece.

The Challenge

The original narrative no longer fit what the community was living through. With production already in progress, the direction had to change quickly without pushing deadlines. The report needed to acknowledge loss and recovery while still feeling steady and professional. At the same time, several stories had to be reworked and new content added to reflect how the college and community responded.

The Approach

I worked closely with the communications team to reshape the story around resilience and shared effort. Visually, the design was simplified and grounded more firmly in BRCC’s core brand, moving away from a campaign-style look toward something quieter and more enduring. I introduced opening and closing spreads that honored students, staff, and first responders, using photography and pacing to set the tone. Throughout the process, coordination with writers and project managers kept the changes focused and intentional.

The Solution

The final report used a clean, brand-forward layout that allowed the content to breathe. Tribute sections framed the publication, while a flexible layout system made it possible to accommodate late content without disrupting the overall flow. The design supported both storytelling and clarity under real time constraints.

Results

Despite the disruption, the report was delivered on schedule. The tribute spreads became a focal point for readers and were frequently mentioned by stakeholders as the most meaningful part of the publication. The finished piece reinforced BRCC’s role not just as an educational institution, but as a steady presence within the community during a difficult year.

Reflection

This project reinforced the importance of being able to change course without losing momentum. The original direction was solid, but the ability to simplify, refocus, and still deliver on time mattered more. It was a reminder that good design work often depends on judgment under pressure, not just creative ideas.
